Geocache Description:

The Oamaru breakwater a 560 m concrete structure was built over a 12 year period from 1872. The completion of the break water provide a safe harbour for shipping. Ships were able to berth discharge cargo and load the abundant volume of local produce which included grain, wool and meat. The ports rapid growth soon came to a end with the completion of the rail link between Christchurch and Dunedin. The rail link allowed larger vessels to by pass Oamaru and to berth at the larger ports at Dunedin and Lyttleton. 1974 saw the last of the commercial coastal ships visit to Oamaru. Since that time the harbour has been the base of a small fishing fleet and private boats.

The breakwater has been regularly maintained to protect the harbour .

The cache is a bison tube with logbook only, BYOP. It is located near the outer end of the breakwater. The breakwater and the seaward mole can be accessed at low tide and on calm sea conditions (do not attempt when a heavy sea is running as waves make an impressive sight as they crash against the breakwater). A number of seals can often also be seen resting on the breakwater.
