Monumento agli ex Internati
...per non dimenticare...
Il monumento agli Ex Internati si trova presso la stazione ferroviaria (oggi dismessa) di Balconi di Pescantina ed è stato inaugurato il 25 settembre 1966 a ricordo delle migliaia di vite umane (circa 700 mila) soccorse volontariamente dalla popolazione di Pescantina tra il 1945 e il 1947.
Ricorda i caduti nei lager nazisti e tutti i Reduci che, subito dopo la fine della II Guerra Mondiale, furono qui internati.
Alla fine del conflitto, Pescantina e in particolare Balconi ebbero un ruolo di primo piano dovuto al fatto che sia la stazione ferroviaria di Verona Porta Nuova così come il ponte ferroviario di Parona di Valpolicella erano stati resi impraticabili dai bombardamenti alleati.
La stazione di Balconi divenne così il luogo in cui i convogli ferroviari che ritornavano in Italia erano costretti a fermarsi. Qui gli ex internati, che non erano ancora giunti a destinazione, una volta scesi proseguivano il loro viaggio con camion o mezzi di fortuna.
Il 25 aprile 2007, Pescantina ricevette la Medaglia d'Oro al merito civile. A fianco del suddetto monumento è stato collocato in forma stabile un carro ferroviario contenente al suo interno fotografie e documenti relativi al rientro in Italia dei deportati dopo la prigionia nei lager.

Monument to former Internees
...not to forget...
The monument to the former Internees is located at the train station (now disused) of Balconi di Pescantina and was inaugurated on September 25, 1966 in memory of the thousands of lives (about 700 thousand) rescued voluntarily by the people of Pescantina between 1945 and 1947.
It remembers the fallen in Nazi concentration camps and all the veterans who, immediately after the end of World War II, were interned here.
At the end of the conflict, in particular Balconi and Pescantina played a major role due to the fact that both the Verona Porta Nuova train station as well as the railway bridge of Parona in Valpolicella had been rendered impassable by allied bombing.
The Balconi station became the place where the trains returning to Italy were forced to stop. Here the former internees, who had not yet arrived at their destination, once they get off they continued their journey by truck or by means of luck.
On 25 April 2007, Pescantina received the Gold Medal for Civil Merit. Alongside of that monument it was placed in a stable form one wagon containing inside photographs and documents relating to the return to Italy of the deportees after their imprisonment in the concentration camps.
