Geocache Description:

Ammo box tethered to a tree in a new section of the Cloudland Canyon State Park. CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES !!

CONGRATULATIONS TO LEAFER54, SMILING IN ACWORTH & WHITTLING FISHER ON THEIR TEAM FTF!!

This geocache is a competitor in the 2017 GGA Geocache Placement Competition.

Cloudland Canyon State Park sits on Lookout Mountain in the NW corner of the state of Georgia. There is a $5 daily entrance fee, unless you are a member of the Friends of Georgia State Parks!

The gates to the Five Points parking lot automatically close at dusk. ALL trails in Cloudland Canyon state park are open 7am to Dusk each day. Do NOT seek ANY caches in Cloudland Canyon State Park (CCSP) after dark !!

There are MANY trails in this area: a trail map of Five Points Recreation Area, which lists the trails by name, is highly recommended! It can be downloaded here:

.

This is in addition to the basic trail map available at entrance kiosk.

Park at the Parking waypoint and set out on the Bankhead trail. You will encounter a trail junction almost immediately; take the right of the two.

Within 1/2 mile, you will reach a 'grand trail junction' where (at least) 11 different hiking and biking trails converge. To find this mystery cache, you will need to find these 3 caches, each on a different one of these trails, all also in the Five Points Recreation Area of the Cloudland Canyon State Park:

  • GC6ZKC6 (CCSP: Windy Ridge Ramble)
  • GC6ZKB1 (CCSP: Eleven Points Squared)
  • GC6ZKBM (CCSP: Cross-Back)

At each of these, you will find a number on the logbook and/or container lid which is a bearing in degrees true. The correct combination of those bearing numbers from two of these caches will enable you to calculate the location of this mystery cache. (This is an essential surveyor's triangulation exercise.) It is up to you to determine which two of the bearing numbers will take you to this cache! If you calculate correctly, depending on the sequence in which you find the 3 listed above, you will find this cache to be less than 2 miles from where you are.

Be sure to bring a scientific calculator, or have such an app on your smart phone. It is also possible to determine the location with a GPS by following bearing lines.

Placed with permission of the park manager and park naturalist. Please take care to understand the basic rules of geocaching in order to help keep the game enjoyable for all who participate. Please do not move or vandalize the container. Replace the cache like or better than you found it (exactly where you found it).

Sign the log book and leave it in the cache. There is room in this cache for most trade items and travel bugs. If you want to take any of other items in the cache, they are there for trade; be sure to leave something of equal or greater value, but don't leave any kind of food items, or anything that is highly aromatic, which could attract critters/creatures/rodents/bugs.

Enjoy your visit at the park and remember to re-hide the cache like or better than you found it and practice, "Leave No Trace." While visiting any Georgia State Park, please obey all park rules and remain on the marked trails as you make your way to find the geocaches!
