It also served as an important basic training site for the Army, Jefferson Barracks had a peak area of 1,518 acres (6.14 km²), and had bunk space for 16 officers and 1,500 enlisted persons. Jefferson Barracks was decommissioned as a military post in 1946 with the end of World War II.
I've recently acquired a map of Jefferson Barracks from 1943. So much has changed ! I'll be placing a series of caches highlighting what was at or near a location in 1943. This was the location of the Southwest Gate to Jefferson Barracks.
Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the gate, but I can tell you that it was just west of Boundary Road, and it was a double gate, that measured 24 feet wide. After passing through the gate, the area to the left was "Paved Drill Area No.2" and the area to the right has no designation. This area can be busy at times !
