A quick stop at Pwllfanogl between Llanfairpwll and Brynsiencyn. Through a gate on the left of the road (on the bend) on to a permissive footpath which takes you down to steps to a footpath along a river down to the Menai Straits. There is a small pier where you can watch the boats going down the Menai Straits. You have to go down a number of steep steps so not suitable for a pram. The cache is also accessable through St.Marys Church cemetary (Llanfair PG) leading to a footpath along the beach. From the cache you can look along the shoreline towards the Britannia Bridge and see the statue of Lord Nelson. The statue which faces the Menai Strait here may look like a product of the British euphoria and mourning after Lord Nelson met his heroic death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. However, the statue was erected much later, in 1873, by an artist experimenting with concrete. It was also a useful landmark for mariners.
From the Cache are beautiful views of Snowdonia and the Menai Straits all the way down to Aberdaron.
Pwllfanogl was once home to Wales’ greatest artist, Sir Kyffin Williams who lived and worked there from 1974 until his death in 2006. His house was the white buidling facing the sea.
I would like to stress a bit of safety advice about walking along the shoreline of the Menai Straits
Admiral Lord Nelson regarded this as being one of the most treacherous stretches of water in his sailing experiences.
Stick to the man-made path and all will be well.
