It also served as an important basic training site for the Army, Jefferson Barracks had a peak area of 1,518 acres (6.14 km²), and had bunk space for 16 officers and 1,500 enlisted persons. Jefferson Barracks was decommissioned as a military post in 1946 with the end of World War II.
I've recently acquired a map of Jefferson Barracks from 1943. So much has changed ! I'll be placing a series of caches highlighting what was at or near a location in 1943.
This was the location of the West gate to Jefferson Barracks. Unfortunately I can't find a picture of the gate, but it was a double gate, with one section being 18 feet, and the other section was 6 feet wide. After passing through the gate, where the shelters and playground are currently located, there were 5 buildings and a tennis court. To the left was a large group of barracks.
