Geocache Description:

THE VILLAGE PUMP In the early 20th century, the village pump was where people got the latest news and gossip. This is were the expression Parish Pump Politics came from. It was common to see women and children collecting their daily water from the Pump in the morning so they would have drinking water for that day. Water for washing clothes was normally done with rain water collected in barrels at the house. This reduced the amount that had to be carried back to the house.

Going to the pump was seen as a little outing because people would meet their friends and neighbours and catch up on what was going on in their area with all the news and gossip. In this area The Balrothery Board of Guardians had, the responsibility of erecting pumps. They placed them where the local committees told them too and the position of where they were to go was quite political and Important bussiness back then and big discussions would be had about where best to erect one and then it would be voted on. The first water pumps were carved out of wooden logs but they later moved to cast iron pumps. The older pumps were square, while the more recent ones were round.
