I recently hike up into the upper reserve to Repair Batty Brian's Helderberg Cache. Enroute I did the Huff and Puff cache, Time for Tea, and eventually got to Batty Brians Cache. On the way back I started thinking maybe it's time for me to place a Grandparent and Grandchild Friendly cache. Starting to feel Me Age. I also realised that some of the Lower Caches had disappeared, like SA Baie Lekker, I presumed muggled.
I found this little Park Bench, high enough along the track to give nice views of the gardens and out towards the Sea. Great spot to just rest, nice fynbos, and always a few birds around. Sugarbirds, Prinia, Dusky Flycatcher, and in summer plenty of Swift Swallow Martins.
NB : The Gardens and Lower Reserve slopes belongs to the City of Cape Town, and they control gate and vehicle access. A small entrance fee is administered, which helps with the upkeep of the reserve, as well as youth educational programs. Currently the entry fee for Adults is R20 PP and R10 per vehicle. Scholars and Pensioners is R10. Vehicles can be parked outside the gate to save money and enjoy the 1st 500m inside the reserve. Local Helderberg Residents can also join the Friends of the "Helderberg Nature Reserve" for an Annual fee, various options and costs are available at the Information Kiosk inside the reserve. PS: The reserve above the Rockband, the Peaks, is under the control of Cape nature. However no special permission is required to access this area.
