Geocache Description:

Note: The cache is not at the listed coordinates.

Living in the smallest state in the country is a source of pride for many Rhode Islanders. However few people know that Rhode Island is actually much larger than a number of entire nations. This cache is the first in a series representing the world's ten smallest countries, all of which are significantly smaller than the Ocean State. These puzzle caches aren't designed to be the most difficult, but hopefully you'll learn something about each country along the way. In most cases, the information provided at the beginning of each cache page will not be particularly helpful in solving the puzzle.

St. Kitts and Nevis

Saint Kitts and Nevis, the 7th smallest nation in the world, is comprised of two main islands, separated by a 2-mile-wide channel, The Narrows. The two islands together cover 261 km2, and form a volcanic mountain chain. Like Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis were occupied by the Carib people upon the time of Christopher Columbus’ visit in 1493. Over time, the native people were exterminated, and replaced with slaves from Africa. In the 1620s the British settled St. Kitts and Nevis, while the French also settled St. Kitts. The islands came under the sole control of the British after a fierce 100-year rivalry between the two empires. In 1958, the islands joined the West Indies Federation, and in 1983 gained their full independence.

As a major sugar producer for the British Empire, the economy of Saint Kitts and Nevis depended heavily on the world’s sugar market. Since the 1980s, when the price of sugar dropped significantly, the government of Saint Kitts and Nevis has sought to encourage tourism in an attempt to diversify its economy. The tropical climate and mountainous terrain, combined with the nation’s focus on the development of renewable sources of energy (as nearly all Caribbean islands have done) has transformed Saint Kitts and Nevis from a small, sugar-producing chain of islands to an eco-tourism and economic hotspot.

The cache can be a Park and Grab, but use stealth! If there's a game going on here, it's almost impossible to find without being noticed, so it would probably be best to come back another day.
