Geocache Description:

My Forgotten Springfield series will take you to forgotten little corners of Springfield, revealing forgotten little bits of history. The series currently also includes award-winning Ghost Lake, award-nominated Abandoned Hooes Road, and Crossroad Development.

This cache is located on a rectangular, county-owned parcel (highlighted in yellow below) with the seemingly odd label: "Dedicated to Public Street"

Property map

As depicted below, this strip of land was intended to be used for the "Cross County Expressway", which had been under discussion since the 1950s. According to historical property maps, this land was first set aside for this purpose in 1971, when the land to the north was subdivided and developed. The plan had the expressway pass to the north of Huntsman Lake before turning north and following the power lines.

Cross County Expressway plan

With the Fairfax County Parkway now safely passing a few hundred yards to the south, this land obviously won't be needed for a highway anytime soon. New developments have also pretty much hemmed in this linear parcel.

From Arley Drive, this is a nice walk through a pleasant neighborhood forest. After crossing the small footbridge, follow the blue blazes uphill. Car to GZ is about 5 minutes.

We hope to keep this well-stocked for the kids.

The early bird catches the worm: Congratulations to vabirdman703 for being the FTF.
