Geocache Description:

This is a multi that will take you to some interesting locations at Nostell Priory

You may do it while you do the C@N series or on its own.

The cache is not at the given location which is the entrance to the carpark!! As you walk round you will get the numbers for A to K.   L = F + J.   M = C x K.   N = G – E – D - J

The cache is at N 53 3B.AKD W 001 2L.MDN

After parking up walk to the church.  You do not need to enter the church itself, but it does have some remarkable windows; unusually most of them are made from Swiss painted glass.

·         Before entering the gate to the churchyard you will note a roped-off grassed area – how many stone bollards = A

·         Enter the churchyard and go to the main entrance.  To the right of it you will see the windows.  Look at the first window – how many areas of glass are surrounded by stonework = B

Set off towards the House.  On the left is a large open area of grass with mature trees

·         How many trees are there?  Do not include any trees behind fencing –  C

Continue towards the house. To the left of it you will find the Stables.

·         Before you enter the stables note the stone obelisks which are over 2 metres tall.  How many are there? – D

·         Over the archway there is a four sided clock tower.  How many sides have a clock face? – E

·         Inside the courtyard.  How many grand arched entrances are there? – F

·         There are lots of windows, some over doors.  How many are not rectangular or square? By window I mean the whole structure, not individual panes or casements. – G

Leave the courtyard and walk in front of the House

·         Looking up you will note a number of grand columns; some touch the façade, some stand away.  How many stand away from the House? – H

·         There are some doors into the House.  How many could you touch without going inside the house?  (At least one is on a balcony with no access from the ground so, obviously, that would not count) – J

After walking past the house follow the asphalt path, this will wind down past Joiner’s Wood on your right, across the bridge, past the lake on your left and straight into the Obelisk meadow, go to the top and you will find the original Gatehouse Lodge (N53° 39.724' W1° 23.147').  Unbelievably, people lived here until the 1950s.  It is no longer possible to go through the gates.

·         How many glazed windows can you see on the accessible sides? – K

All Caches have been placed with the enthusiastic cooperation of the National Trust.

Parking is free for NT members, remember all parking fees go towards the upkeep of this place.

Nostell’s parkland is open 07:00 - 19:00 or dusk if earlier; put WF4 1QE into your SatNav if coming by car.  Although there are ways of getting into the parkland by public footpath at all times, please don’t cache at night by torchlight as you might be thought to be a poacher.

Arriva Yorkshire (( 0344 8004411) operates regular bus services between Wakefield and South Emsall 485 and between Wakefield and Doncaster 497.

Cycling is encouraged – at the time of writing people arriving by bike get a free cup of tea!

In the Stables Courtyard you can find clean, free toilets and baby change facilities; a café; shop and a tap and bowl for dogs.  NT staff are on hand to give info.

The terrain is gentle – some hard paths, some cut grass and woodland paths.  There are no stiles so it is suitable for “tramper” style mobility scooters if someone is with you to open the gates.  Many people walk the parkland with buggies.  Dogs with responsible owners are welcome.  There might be livestock in the fields, controlled by temporary electric fences.  The beasts are used to walkers, but you should take the usual precautions. (There are permanent gates to allow access; people often wonder what they are for when there are no electric fences!)
