Geocache Description:

This is the seventh of a series of caches placed within Sugar Hollow Park to educate others about environmental education and conservation of natural resources. The main purpose of this series is to use technology to get people away from technology! Parking is free. Please obey Sugar Hollow Park rules and hours! An exception has been issued by Groundspeak.

The cave on this trail is a perfect example of karst topography. Karst topography is a landscape formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. It is characterized by underground drainage systems with sinkholes and caves. Caves and karst make landscapes diverse, fascinating, and rich in resources, including the largest springs and most productive groundwater on Earth. A total of 175 different minerals occur in limestone caves, a few of which have only been found in caves. Caves and karst provide a unique subsurface habitat for rare animals. Caves preserve fragile archaeological and paleontological materials for millennia. Throughout history people have used caves for many purposes. The potential of caves as natural laboratories may be their most significant future use. The many uses of caves and karst are a measure of their importance. Don't forget about their purely aesthetic value, however, and the sense of adventure and exploration they provide.
