There is parking available at the posted coordinates. There are several caches around the loop including a bonus cache and doing the whole loop and all caches will take 2-3 hours, following the loop clockwise. See Can't See The Wood For The Trees for loop information. If you have less time this multi should take about an hour to complete and will give you a tour of some of the Devil's Bit loop walk. There will be some steep climbs doing the loop this way around hence the terrain rating.
Mobile phone signal is reasonable around the loop walk, however it can be patchy so I would recommend downloading cache information beforehand. Make sure to have hiking boots, rain gear, drinks and a mobile phone with you. Some parts of the walk can get slippery and muddy in wet weather.
Please be respectful of the area and the keep in mind that Coillte promotes the Leave No Trace outdoor ethics programme as the code for recreation users of all its forest properties. Please follow the Leave No Trace principles as outlined here Leave No Trace
Stage 1 In the carpark you will see some information signs. Look for and take note of the Trailhead Number ABC. Now go through the kissing gate and follow the trail up the hill. On your way to Stage 2 you need to do some counting. D = total number of baths visible on your left
Stage 2 Time to catch your breath and enjoy the views over the valley below before turning left and going through the second kissing gate, entering the forestry area and another uphill walk.
Stage 3 Carden's Folly is an ornamental tower built by John Carden in the 18th Century as part of the Barnane Castle demense. In 1832 there was an anti-tithe meeting held here with over 50,000 people in attendance from all over Ireland. Count the number of window openings in the tower = E
From the Folly either turn left and follow the loop clockwise via Fern Gully or go straight up to the grotto.
Stage 4 The year the grotto was blessed - the year the grotto was built = F
From the grotto, you have the option of continuing uphill and taking the path straight up and around to Long Rock seeking Devil's Bit or you can take the left path to climb up Little Rock to the 45 foot high cross which was erected in 1953-4 to celebrate the Marian Year
Now take a seat on the picnic bench in front of the grotto and do some maths. The cache can be found at N52 ([E-F] / [D-A]) ([2 * D] + A + F) . (C - [2 * A])(B)(C / D) W007 (D + A + F)(E - D - [2 * F]) . ([2 * D] + F)(D)(A + F)
