THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES

This abandoned railway line started out in 1883 as

“Norfolk, Virginia Beach Railroad and Improvement Company”

A nineteen-mile, narrow-gauge railroad that connected

Downtown Norfolk to the Virginia Beach oceanfront.

Following the railroads construction the company purchased 1600 acres

of shoreline and developed an exclusive seaside resort.

In 1885, the Princess Anne Hotel was the first “Resort Hotel”.

It extended from what is now 14th Street to 16th Street.

The primary depot was located at 17th Street at milepost 17.5.

Several other stops were made, including the Cavalier Hotel,

which opened in 1927.

A Time Table from 1946 shows eleven round trips between

Terminal Station-Norfolk and the Cavalier Hotel.

Passenger service on the beach and south bound lines ended in 1948.
