Geocache Description:

One of the things Danang is well known for is the abundance of beautifully made bridges over the Han river. This location has a bit of history to it going back to the French colonial times and American occupation. It also has a beautiful viewing point of the city and the old Nguyen Van Troi bridge which stands next to the new Tran Thi Ly Bridge.

The French built in 1951 the 520 Meter long ‘De Lattre Tassigny’ bridge at this location, named after a French general. The Americans built in 1965 a parallel bridge called the ‘Trinh Minh’ bridge to connect their bases and transport military personnel and armory from one side of Danang to another. That bridge still stands today and is now called the Nguyen Van Troi bridge, named after a bomber who was caught and executed in 1964 as he was trying to assassinate US Secretary of Defense minister Robert McNamara.

The cache is located near the start of the old Nguyen Van Troi bridge, the old French bridge is not there anymore. Please be careful as there will be mugglers around. It’s a popular place with young love birds sitting in the shade at night. You can take good photos of or from the bridges and is a nice evening walk, either accessible by Green Island where the Mercure is located or from Bach Dang Street. If you have a motorbike you can even drive up a few meters from the geocache. Please put the rock covering the PVC container back in its place.
