Geocache Description:

Celebrating Kingston-upon-Hull's year as the UK City of Culture, the Hull Culture Cache series will take you on a whistle-stop tour of some of the locations that will host events and art installations throughout 2017. The venues are spread out across the city, suburbs and wider East Riding area. This is central to the Hull2017 ethos of engaging strongly with the local communities.

All caches in the series should be simple finds. The series is designed to show off our fabulous city and surrounding area

Some caches will contain a bonus letter on the log sheet. Make a note of the letters you find and the cache that they were found in. These will be needed for a future bonus cache

7. Hull Venue

History

Up until the 1970s, this area was part of the Hull Docklands. Albert, William Wright and Railway Docks to the South, Humber and Princes Dock to the East. The docks fell in to decline and eventually closed and a new Dual Carriageway ripped through the middle of the area, linking the west of the city with the new modern docklands to the east. Much of the area was regenerated with the old Humber Dock being converted in to a marina and in the late 80's Princes Quay shopping centre was built on the old Princes Dock. Many of the dockside warehouses were demolished and the remaining few converted in to offices and apartments.

This particular area to the West has lay mainly derelict and unused for many years, save for a couple of pubs and small music venues. It was also home to a healthy late-night trade in gentlemen's entertainment for many years

2017

For much of 2017, this will be a building site, however rising from the rubble will be the new £36m Hull Venue, a 3500 seat music and events complex which will also host a conference and exhibition space. This is a major part of the City Plan and 2017 legacy
