Geocache Description:

HR

EN

The Rupnik Line is a system of fortifications or line of defense, whose construction began in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1925. This was a response to the Vallo Alpino (Italian system of fortifications). The line never served its purpose because it was abandoned before the attack of  Italy in April's War. It was named after the Yugoslav general Leon Rupnik, from Slovenia. The construction of "Rupnik line" began in 1935. In those years special construction crews were formed, which numbered 15,000 people. They were distributed in 12 departments. 5 of them were to the border with Italy, one on the border with Austria, 5 to the border with Hungary.

From 1935 to 1937 the working majority were the soldiers, who built the infrastructure and roads. By 1940, the number of builders has increased to 40,000 people. They built mostly underground bunkers and fortifications. Most of the construction materials (steel) was imported from the Czech Republic. After 01/09/1939 (start WWII) building was taken over by the army. They recruited the reservists and thus solved the problem of the labor force. According to the plans the line was supposed to be completed by 1947. Plans were based on French and Czech fortifications in two defensive lines. The line has never served its purpose. After the occupation, the line was destroyed in the Italian occupation zone, while the Germans saved it. After WWII the line was not maintained and today it is still decaying, except few individual objects which are protected.
