General Chaos
Hezekiah Gear was arrived at the mines in 1827. He had served with Commodore Perry in the Battle of Lake Erie during the war of 1812. He bought a tract near Council Hill. He farmed the land and prospected for lead. Just after the close of the Black Hawk War, in which he participated , he discovered an immense deposit of mineral. He became one of the most wealthy and enterprising men of the Northwest, and at one time he was, perhaps, more extensively engaged in mining and smelting than any other person.
In 1847 Capt. Gear was a member of the State Senate. Impetuous and indomitable energy, undaunted courage, strictest honesty, and great generosity were the prominent characteristics of Capt H. H. Gear. In the days of his prosperity he contributed liberally to all public and charitable enterprises. He gave to Galena the lots on which its' public school building stands, and established the Episcopal Church in Galena.
Hezekiah built a beautiful Mansion in Galena. This cache will take you there for a pretend reception for Galena's Nine Civil War Generals. However there is a problem with the invitations. Someone played with the Generals names and scrambled them. We need to know the correct names to find the location of the reception.
Unscramble the names. Then look up the year each general was born. The last digit of each birth year will be used in the formula. The first General information is given as an example.

From GZ the Gear Mansion can be seen to the south. The Gear property extended from GZ past the last home visible in that direction. The mansion had fallen into disrepair before I was born. During my teen years it was restored by a local dentist. It was a private residence for years. For a while, not long ago, it was a Bed and Breakfast. Now it is again a private residence.
