Arboretum is latin for "a place for trees".
The 16 hectare Armidale Arboretum was originally gazetted as a Public Reserve in 1882. The site was neglected until the mid 1960's when a proposal to rezone the land for residential use provoked public protest. The Arboretum developed but with it began many problems . . . . lack of funds, drought, eucalyptus dieback and unsuitable plant selections. There were fund raising schemes, awareness days, donations and working bees. In 1985 a public submission for preliminary work on the Aquatic Gardens as a Bi-Centennial Project was successful and the work was completed in 1988.
Today the Arboretum is a heritage listed park containing thousands of native and imported trees, walking tracks, lookout, picnic shelters, toilet block, children's playground and the Aquatic and Sensory Gardens.
