Geocache Description:

A ROYAL LOOKOUT:

The Smugglers Series -  This is Cache 2 in a 5 cache series.  The first 4 caches can be found individually, but you will need the code (number and letter) hidden in each of these first 4, to enable you to solve the riddle that leads to the final cache (Smugglers 5) a great final cache for swapping loot.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE -  Once you have left Smugglers 2 heading for Smugglers 3, you will come to a gate into a field.  IMPORTANT There are dangerous cliff edges to the right immediately after the gate. Stay to the path and keep safe.

Cache Directions

From Smugglers 1, follow the South West Coastal Path in an easterly direction towards the Yealm estuary.  Just make sure you sit occasionally and enjoy the views along this route, they are amazing and it is easy to see why the Coastguards used these cliff paths to look out for smugglers.  On a clear day you can see the Eddystone Lighthouse, Rame Head and across to Whitsands Bay and beyond.

This geocache is an easy find, no need to climb over any walls please do not force any stones the cache is in plain sight and easy to lift.

Sign the log and move on to the next in the series to learn more about the smuggling activity in the area and the role of the Coastguards in their attempts to control it.

Cache History

These caches are all supported by Wembury Local History Society, in the Parish of Wembury.

"The South West Coastal Path was originally created by coastguards, patrolling the south west peninsular looking out for smugglers. They literally had to check every inlet so their cliff top walk was well used and gives us the amazing path we use today. The path has also been used by fishermen looking for shoals of fish and checking the sea conditions." https://www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk/about-coast-path/

If you enjoyed this mini-series, why not look into the other Wembury Local History Society caches, that are all hidden around the Parish of Wembury.

The National Trust have outlined a superb walk that covers all the Geocaches in this mini series, and also several more. Please keep children and dogs well away from the cliff edge, keep dogs on a lead if they are likely to run off.    https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wembury/trails/wembury-bay-and-the-river-yealm-walk

Many thanks to the National Trust for the upkeep of this section of the SW Coastal Path, and also for allowing our geocache to be placed here.
