Geocache Description:

Penicuik Spring Fling

Placed with permission of the Estate Ranger.
A round trip with a few new caches along the route.
The last section back to the Estate grounds involves a short road walk and crossing the main A702.

Penicuik Estate was purchased by the Clerk family in the 17th century and is still in their ownership today. See the Penicuik House Preservation Trust website for a full history of the house and the estate.
The Estate is a working rural business and includes the built structures within the Designed Landscape which, as part of the Penicuik House Preservation Trust's Designed Landscape Project, are being repaired and restored over a 20 year programme of conservation projects. Penicuik House has been extensively consolidated over a period of 8 years to prevent further deterioration and the courtyard is open most days from 10am - 4pm when the Ranger is present. The House is open to the public every Sunday, 2pm - 4pm with a guided tour at 2pm.
Walkers, dog-walkers, cyclists and horse riders are all welcome to enjoy access to Penicuik Estate free of charge, providing they act responsibly at all times.
Remember that this is a working estate so farm vehicles often use the tracks and forestry work is frequently undertaken in wooded areas. With the Estate supporting an active farming business with livestock, it is essential that dogs are kept under close control at all times and visitors are asked to respect the peacefulness of theis beautiful place so as not to spoil the enjoyment of other people.
Please do remember to clear up after your dog and keep your dog on the lead to avoid disturbing livestock and wildlife as there are lots of young lambs in the fields. To make a round tour follow the way marked route for Silverburn and then return by the minor road to the Estate entrance. Walk down the drive as far as the Shepherds Cottage and turn left and follow the track back to the car park.
