Geocache Description:

A straightforward (but not necessarily easy!) urban nano just outside the City walls. Room for log only. Please bring a pen/pencil to sign the log, and watch out for muggles and cars at busy times!

Ossie's Scrapyard was a wonderful little place where you could go for parts for your car.  There were big entrance gates at the Layerthorpe side, near where the car rental place is now. Scrapped cars were piled all around the yard and you could wander round and find what you wanted, remove it yourself, and go haggle a price for it with the owner (Ossie/Ozzie).  Well I say haggle, but it was more a case of you pay whatever he said, he wasn't a man you would want to argue with, but he was a nice bloke and fair.  I spent many hours in there getting bits for my old cars when I was younger.  Sadly, the place closed down in 1997 when the bridge over the Foss was rebuilt and the roads rerouted to what you see today.  All that is left is what is now the car rental place and its small car park which you can see across the river from gz.  I don't know what happened to Ozzie, I imagine him living it up on a luxury yacht in sunny climes, though I do have a vivid imagination.

Anyway, I thought I'd place a little nano here in tribute to Ozzie and his scrapyard, made out of a bit of scrap from one of my cars.  After a couple of these fell into the river or just disappeared, I tried a slightly smaller micro, but those disappeared too, so now trying nano size.  While it can be a busy road at times, gz is on a large footpath and is relatively safe, but please take care if crossing the road to get to gz.  There's a pelican crossing from waypoint 1, and other ways to get to gz too.  There are plenty of things around here to point at and take photos of while loitering around finding/logging it.  Sometimes there are swans on the river, but more usually geese or ducks.  There's a skate park inside the multi-storey car park nearby which can be noisy if in use too, you can always bring a skateboard and pretend you're waiting to go in there. The car park itself is interesting in its history - it's the site of an old Jewish burial ground (hence the street name, Jewbury). There's a discreet plaque on the wall near the Jewbury entrance and a small flower bed where some of the remains were reinterred when it was all dug up for the supermarket car park to be built.

There's plenty of parking nearby, and it's only a short walk from the City centre, or a minor detour if you're walking the City walls, as there's an entrance just across the road at waypoint 1.

Cache is a tiny magnetic nano.

Take care and watch out for muggles, it can get busy here at times!

Initial contents (of the original larger cache, which is now probably at the bottom of the Foss, or stuck to a passing boat) : logbook and a small aluminium FTF token for the first to find it!
