Located south of Libby, Montana in the Kootenai National Forest
Please Note: I no longer live in the area, having headed for the snow-free winters of western Oregon. If someone would care to upgrade the container or otherwise maintain the cache, it would be most appreciated.
Be prepared for a steep climb to get this cache. The hike is approximately 4.5 miles one way from the parking spot, and car camp, at: N48 03.905 W115 23.127. Cross the road and then the creek and follow the old logging road for approx. 1 mile before the trail climbs steep and narrow. Be warned that the creek is not crossable in the late spring during runoff. We got over just fine (end of May), but the day was hot and the water level rose over night, and we were not able to cross the next morning. We had to follow the river downstream for a hour before we found a large, safe log to cross over on.
Be sure to bring plenty of water and some basic necessities.
------------ Update: 9/2016 ------------
I'm thrilled to see that adventurous souls continue to track down this cache. When I planted it, in 2002, there were 38 geocaches within 100 miles of my home in N. Idaho. Now the system allows for a search only 30 miles out finds me 2,655 geocaches (an estimated 9,000 within that same 100 miles radius). *Sigh* So much for my quest to bag all 38. Even in late 2001 it was apparent that they were growing faster than I could catch them.
All that beside the point, which is that individuals with a some simple technology can find themselves atop a mountain in Montana gazing at the Cabinet mountains and scratching their names in a logbook. Kudos to you.
