Geocache Description:

A Lifesaving Device:

The Smugglers Series -  This is Cache 4 in a 5 cache series.  The first 4 caches can be found individually, but you will need the code (number and letter) hidden in each of these first 4, to enable you to solve the riddle that leads to the final cache (Smugglers 5) a great final cache for swapping loot.

Multi-cache - To solve this multicache, you will need to go to the National Trust Information Board at the coordinates given. There are a number of questions to answer which will give the code required to work out the geocache's actual position. The geocache is only a short walk from the Information Board.

Cache Directions

Follow the path Eastward from Smugglers 3 once you have passed through the gate there are no more dangerous cliffs in the area, only ponies on the loose!

Once found please sign the log and re-hide the cache in a dry place as per hint.

History and Multicache questions

A device known as the "Dennett Rocket" was in use in the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries, it fired a line from the shore to a stricken vessel; crew and passengers could then be removed using a "Breeches Buoy".   In 1900, the Coastguard Station at Wembury was given it's own Dennett Rocket. Rocket House used to be a garage to store this lifesaving equipment in.

Using the information board answer the below questions and solve this riddle to help you find Smugglers 4.

If you enjoyed this mini-series, why not look into the other Wembury Local History Society caches, that are all hidden around the Parish of Wembury.

The National Trust have outlined a superb walk that covers all the Geocaches in this mini series, and also several more. Please keep children and dogs well away from the cliff edge, keep dogs on a lead if they are likely to run off.    https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wembury/trails/wembury-bay-and-the-river-yealm-walk

Many thanks to the National Trust for the upkeep of this section of the SW Coastal Path, and also for allowing our geocache to be placed here.
