Ulmer's Big Can of Beans 'Take 2' Traditional Geocache

This is a big cache with big swag. Books, DVD's, VHS, CD's, toys, stuffed animals, games and cute oddities .  Please trade even or trade up & don't forget to look at the back of the can.

This very large geocache had orginally been located up in Kalispell since May of 2012 having been placed by Ecylram.  He had some health issues resulting in this cache getting archived. 

Three other local geocachers (JBraach, Betzij, ldalbey) and myself (blackdogsMT) discussed how awesome this cache was and how we hated to see it go away for good so we asked about taking it South and resurrecting it, allowing for it to continue on.  Ecylram and his family said ok!  Thank you Ecylram!

Ulmer's Big Can Of Beans now sits on private land of my (blackdogsMT) parents in the outskirts of Charlo and just a mile off of Hwy 93 South.  (My Dad even helped dry it out and place it after JBraach picked it up from Kalispell and dropped it off at my parents place.) Thank you JBraach & Dad for being a big part in redoing this awesome cache!

The cache has magnificent views of the Mission Mountains in the background of it's placement.  There is a spot to pull off the road if you want to right at the cache location.  It is a culvert with dirt and grass covering the ditch allowing ditch crossing.  You are welcome to use that or just park on the slow county road and walk across the ditch.

On May 3rd, 2000 Dave Ulmer placed the first Geocache - The Original Stash. With that move, Geocaching was born. 

The first cache was a black 5-gallon bucket buried partially in the ground. The orginal contents, aside from the log book and pencil, were a:

• Delorme Topo USA software
• Two CD Roms
• Cassette Recorder
• George of the Jungle VHS tape
• Ross Perot book
• Four $1 bills
• Slingshot
• "Can of Beans" (really Black-eyed Peas)

The "Original Stash" was later destroyed by an Oregon road crew. Instead of replacing the cache, a tribute plaque was placed at the original site. All that was left of  the original cache was a, now badly deteriorated, can of beans which has now been turned into the "Most-Found Travel Bug in the World"

In honor of Dave Ulmer, we've placed a can of Ulmer's Beans at the above coordinates. Because Ulmer had an oversized impact on geocaching, we placed this oversized cache. Enjoy!

The Location:
This case was placed with full permission of the land owner. Take all the time you want going through the cache and writing in the log.

The "Can of Beans":
This is the largest can of beans you'll likely ever see. To open, unhook the handle on the top ring and lift it off the container then lift off the lid.

The Swag:
This cache has been placed with a (near) duplicate of the contents of the "Original Stash" down to the VHS copy of "George of the Jungle"  and a slingshot. The small "Can of Beans" is a careful copy since food is no longer allowed in caches. In addition, the cache has been started out with books, music, stuffed animals, and misc. toys and cute oddities. Come prepared to trade - a good book, CD, a stuffed animal  or some cute oddity would be a good choice.

The White 5-gallon Bucket:
The log book can be found in the 5-gallon bucket inside the cache. Just unscrew the black lid to open the bucket. This bucket is NOT swag and should not be removed from the cache. I recommend placing all small items and trackables in this bucket so it can be easily retrieved by others.

Closing The Container:
Return the log to the 5-gallon bucket and screw the black lid back on so the contents don't fall out. Then carefully place the lid on the container and make sure it's centered. Then, place the ring around the lid and tighten carefully to make sure it is grabbing the lid and barrel. Finish by hooking the handle back in its original resting place. Please double check your work before you leave so the next cacher has dry contents.
