«La battaglia che portò alla liberazione di Cecina (29 giugno – 2 luglio 1944) fu dura e sanguinosa. Tra i molti episodi avvenuti nei quattro giorni di cruenti scontri, uno in particolare è rimasto celebre, tanto da avere acquisito negli anni una fama che supera i confini nazionali. Si tratta di un “duello” tra un carro armato Sherman americano ed un possente Tiger tedesco, avvenuto in via Montanara la sera del 1º luglio. Contrariamente a quanto accadeva di solito, a Cecina fu il tank statunitense a prevalere, nonostante la netta inferiorità quanto ad armamento e blindatura. I carri si trovarono all’improvviso l’uno di fronte all’altro, a pochi metri di distanza, e fecero fuoco contemporaneamente. I Germanici, nella concitazione del momento, sbagliarono mira. Dopo aver visto invece il proprio proiettile da 75 mm rimbalzare sulla poderosa corazza frontale del Tiger, il comandante dello Sherman ordinò al pilota di indietreggiare, approfittando del polverone sollevato dagli spari e dalle manovre, e nascondere il carro a ridosso di una villetta a lato della strada. I Tedeschi, nel tentativo di inseguire il mezzo nemico, caddero nella trappola: una seconda cannonata colpì il fianco del Tiger, dotato di una corazza meno spessa, e lo perforò, penetrando in corrispondenza del serbatoio del carburante. Il colpo stavolta si rivelò fatale: il gigantesco tank fu fermato e cadde preda di un incendio incontrollabile.»

"The battle that led to the liberation of Cecina (29 June-2 July 1944) was hard and bloody. Among the many episodes that took place during the four days of bloody clashes, one in particular has remained famous, so that it has acquired over the years a reputation that goes beyond national boundaries.
