Geocache Description:

Mount Arucas is a volcano which erupted approximately 300.000 years ago, which in geological terms places it in the Recent Cycle. It is one of the most recent examples of volcanic activity on Gran Canaria.

La Montaña de Arucas es un volcán cuya erupción tuvo lugar hace aprocimadamente unos 300.000 años, siendo una de las manifestaciones volcánicas más modernas de la isla, estando englobada en lo que la geologia insular denomina como Ciclo Reciente.

It is composed of volcanic rubble, gravel, rock bobbles and several layers of basalt. These materials resulted from the rapid cooling of the lava flow which contained gases and a lot of stream, ehan it reached the surface. In general these rocks are soft apart from basalt wich is very hard.

Está formada por diferentes materiales, fundamentalmente bambas, escorias (cascajo) y lapillis (picón), con unos pocos niveles de basalto. Estos materiales geológicos surgen a partir del rápido enfriamento, en la superficie, de una colada de lava que contiente gases y vapor de agua en abundancia. Se caracerizan, en lienas generales, por su poca consistencia, con excepción del basalto gue es una roca muy dura.

The cone is part of the volcanic chain known as "Caldereta-Montaña de Cardones". This is a line of ten volcanoes wich emerged one by one over a period of time, beginning with the Caldereta volcano in Valleseco, followed by Firgas and eventually finiching in Montaña de Cardones in Arucas.

Este cono forma parte de una cadena volcánica denominada "Caldereta-Montaña de Cardones", que abarca diez edificios volcánios con la misma alineación, qu surge en un espacio dererminado de tiempo y que parte desde el volcán denominado Caldereta (término municipal de Valleseco), seguido por Firgas y llega hasta el volcán de Montaña de Cardones (Arucas).

Volcanic matter from the eruption bloced the Arucas river valley. Water vuld not escape and a basin formed which filled with water creating a lagoon in Las Vergas de Arucas. Material wached down by erosionwas deposited in the lagoon, eventually filling it. With the passage of time the river valley flowed again as water excavated its way through the rubble, winding past obstacles and eventually flowing into the sea in the area known today as Cebolla.

Como consecuencia de la erupción de este volcán, se obstruyó el cauce del barranco de Arucas, ceguando su desembocadura y facilitando la formacion de una cuencia endorreica, en la que se instaló una laguna (wue se ubicaba en una parte de la zona conocida, actualmente como Las Vegas de Arucas). En esta laguna se fueron despositando materiales arrastrados por la erosión (aluviones) hasta que se rellenó por completo. Con el transcurso den tiempo, el barranco se abrió paso nuevamente exavando su cause entre los materiales avumulados y, tras sortear diversos obstáculos, desembocó en la costa, tal y como lo conocemos hoy, en las proximadades del lugar conocido como Cebolla.

2. Many places on Gran Canaria there are caves used as homes, driving up Montaña Arucas you will see this? How many do you se? Can you think of how caves was made (Naturaly or digged by hand)?

3. Describe the material and colour of the feature on top of this mountain.

Note: The mountain has four stone viewpoints, facing out over each of the four points of the compass. Feel free to move around to theese viewpoints and enjoy the beautiful cenary.

Nota: La montaña tiene cuatro puntos de vista de piedra, mirando hacia fuera sobre cada uno de los cuatro puntos de la brújula. Siéntase libre de moverse alrededor de estos puntos de vista y disfrutar de la hermosa cenary.
