Nikau Scenic Reserve is situated close to the main road heading north to Kaingaroa. There are two forest blocks connected by a wetland (made accessible by a new board walk). The best stands of nikau are in the western block and well worth a visit after finding the cache. Also present is Chatham Island mahoe, karamu, ribbonwood, matipo, hoho, supplejack, kopi and two species of akeake. The spectacular yellow flowering rautini tree has been planted in recent times. The rare endemic toetoe is present in the swamp areas. The well maintained paths are flat and easy to walk around. Enjoy a walk through what would have been the common forest type of the northern lowlands of main Chatham Island. Fantails are present but unfortunately other native bird species are scarce or absent at present.
The cache is a small container hidden inside a hollow in a tree. Remember to bring a pen.
