Als Edelgase werden die Elemente der 8. Hauptgruppe bezeichnet. Sie alle sind farb- und geruchlose, nicht brennbare und kaum wasserlösliche Gase. Sie kommen atomar statt molekular vor, da sie chemisch nahezu keine Verbindungen eingehen können. Krypton, das "Verborgene" (griech.: Kryptos), ist bereits schwerer und somit auch leichter zu verflüssigen als Luft. Es wurde wie Neon 1898 dutch William Ramsay und Morris William Travers entdeckt.
