Geocache Description:

Nice spot to stop and take in some history.  Plenty of easy parking whether travelling West or East.  If you are travelling East, you will have to cross Hwy 80 on foot but it is not a busy one, so it should not be a problem to do so.

Cache is a small container, hidden close to the Historical Marker.  It contains some fun swag, including a cool FTF skull bead, if you wish.

Here you will see the stage that remains, where train passengers would come on and off the train that passed through Rodeo en route to El Paso, Texas.  The steps and platform are still intact, though they are now on private land. (the cache is not; it is close to the historical marker.)  One reason for people to stop here was that, at the time, Arizona was a "dry" state, while New Mexico was not.  If you venture through the town and notice streets that no longer have buildings along them, consider that there were many buildings back on those streets until 30 years ago or so.  Those buildings were largley saloons and brothels, but very little exists today to indicate that anything at all was there.

The El Paso and Southwestern railroad was constructed in 1902 by Phelps, Dodge and Company, to link El Paso, Texas with the copper mines of Bisbee, Arizona. New Mexico Highway 9, the "Border Route", between Columbus and Rodeo, parallels the rail line, and actually utilizes a portion of the abandoned railroad bed. The Southern Pacific's "Golden State Limited" and "Californian" passenger trains passed through Rodeo until 1952.

The log is water resistant paper; if it happens to be damp, which is unlikely, please just give it a wipe and sign your visit.  BYOP.

Have fun, and happy caching!

Congratulations to Big Hickory for your FTF!
