Alkalimetalle sind silbrig glänzende, reaktive Metalle, die in ihrer Valenzschale ein einzelnes Elektron besitzen. Sie gehören alle zur ersten Hauptgruppe. Das weiche, silbrigweiße glänzende Alkalimetall entzündet sich spontan bei Luftzutritt. Rubidium und seine Verbindungen besitzen ein nur kleines Anwendungsspektrum und werden hauptsächlich in der Forschung und Entwicklung eingesetzt.
