Geocache Description:

Celebrating Kingston-upon-Hull's year as the UK City of Culture, the Hull Culture Cache series will take you on a whistle-stop tour of some of the locations that will host events and art installations throughout 2017. The venues are spread out across the city, suburbs and wider East Riding area. This is central to the Hull2017 ethos of engaging strongly with the local communities.

All caches in the series should be simple finds. The series is designed to show off our fabulous city and surrounding area

Some caches will contain a bonus letter on the log sheet. Make a note of the letters you find and the cache that they were found in. These will be needed for a future bonus cache

10. Craven Park Stadium

History

The home of Hull Kingston Rovers RLFC since moving from the "old" Craven Park in 1989, the move went hand in hand with a downturn in fortunes for the club bringing an end to the glory days of the 1980s.

Greyhound racing was also held at the ground from it opening, until moving to The Boulevard in 2003. Craven Park was also home to the Hull Vikings Speedway team from 1995. 2004 was The Vikings most successful season, winning the treble of Premier League, Knockout Cup and Craven Shield. Just one year later they folded due to financial problems.

Hull Kingston Rovers took the opportunity to make significant improvements to the ground and pitch following the removal of both tracks. The pitch was widened and re-layed, bringing an end to it's reputation as one of the worst in the RFL. The East stand was extended following Hull KRs promotion to Super League and a new North Stand was completed in 2013 bringing the capacity to 12,200.

It has hosted 4 RL International matches, including 2 during the 2013 World Cup.

In 2015, Craven Park hosted the 'Rumble on the Humber', where after ten rounds, Olympic gold medalist Luke Campbell defeated local rival Tommy Coyle, with a record crowd for the ground of 15,000.

2017

Former Beautiful South members, Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott, will play a gig "Beauty In The East" at the ground in June as part of the City Of Culture Celebrations. They will be supported by The Divine Comedy and Billy Bragg. It is expected that a crowd of over 20,000 will be in attendance, once again setting a new record for the stadium.
