My Mother's parents are both layed to rest here.
Grandmother Ruth- I did not get to know my Grandmother Ruth as when I was 9 months old I was sitting on her lap on the passenger side of the pickup with my mother driving. My grandmother had a pan with knives in it also. My mother looked over and Grandma was letting me play with the knives. That is when my Mother knew that something was wrong with my Grandma, and when we lost her to the LORD. She had to be a wonderful lady as my Mother was a Wonderful person.
Grandpa Jake lived a long time and I got to spend a lot of time with him. He was a farmer that lived northeast of Deer Creek until the tornado came along and took everything that he had. I was about 8 or 9 when this happened and Grandpa had remarried to a great lady. They had been warned about bad weather and him and Grandma Helen had went down in the cellar to wait out the storm. The cellar was on the northeast side of the house with the driveway running along the south side of the house from the west. It was about 1/4 mile long. Grandpa got impatient and came out of the cellar to see what was happening. As he walked up the east side of the house and peered around the corner to the west the tornado was coming down the driveway. He ran back to the cellar and shut the door and him and Grandma Helen grabbed the rope they had tied onto the door and held onto it while the tornado came over. When it was gone, they was pulled to the front of the cellar, but was okay. They lost their house and all out building. By the time we got their from Arkansas City, Kansas it was dark and muddy and Mom would not let use get out of the car. (we were to little you see) What I do remember that night was my Mom picking up the chickens and loading them in the back of our station wagon as they had no chicken coop to go to and they were totally distressed. The next several days were spent roaming the place looking for anything that was their, and there was not much there to find.
