Geocache Description:

The Irish National Stud’s Japanese Gardens are renowned throughout the world and are the finest of their kind in Europe.

In 1900 Colonel William Walker, bought the land at the edge of the Curragh and called it Tully Stud Farm. He was the son of a Scottish brewer who developed the scotch whiskey Johnnie Walker.

While stationed in India with the British Army, Walker developed a fascination with Eastern philosophies, including Buddhism and astrology. Between the years 1906 and 1910, Walker created a Japanese Garden that is acclaimed as the finest of its kind in Europe.

The gardens were laid out by Japanese master horticulturist Tassa Eida and his son Minoru. Their aim was, through trees, plants, flowers, lawns, rocks and water, to symbolise the ‘Life of Man’.

The garden traces the soul from oblivion to eternity and portrays the human experience as it journeys by paths of its own choice through life - birth, childhood, marriage, parenthood, old age, death and the afterlife.

St Fiachra’s Garden is also within the grounds of The National Stud, this beautiful garden uses Irish rocks, trees, and plants along with water as it’s central element. St Fiachra is the patron Saint of gardeners, A descendent of the high kings of Ireland, he died in France in 670 AD.
