Geocache Description:

(EN) The Reed Flute Cave is a landmark and tourist attraction in Guilin, Guangxi, China. It is a natural limestone cave with multicolored lighting and has been one of Guilin’s most interesting attractions for over 1200 years. It is over 180 million years old. It offers magnificent rock and mineral formations, stone pillars, and carbon deposits. Illuminated by different colored lights. The cave got its name from the type of reed growing outside, which can be made into flutes. Reed Flute Cave is filled with a large number of stalactites, stalagmites and other rock formations. Inside, there are more than 70 inscriptions written in ink, which can be dated back as far as 792 AD in the Tang Dynasty. These aged inscriptions tell us that it has been an attraction in Guilin since ancient times. It was rediscovered in the 1940s by a group of refugees fleeing the Japanese troops. Nowadays, multicolored lighting artificially illuminates the cave. Limestone or calcium carbonate is a sedimentary rock, organogenic dominant, white, gray or yellow. The rock is composed mainly of calcite and aragonite minerals both chemical formula (CaCO3). Generally limestone is formed from biogenic sediments, but may have a genesis of chemical reactions or processes forming clusters. Limestones have a significant economic importance, being used as a raw material in the construction industry, are natural reservoirs for storage of petroleum, natural gas, or rock in karst processes that occur with the formation of caves which are places of tourist attraction. These calcareous rocks passing through the calcium carbonate and enriched with them, reach the surface they percipate from the salt solution in stratisfied or fine needle shaped crystals forms. Based on the Mohs hardness scale hardness of 3.4 to 4, it can be easily grinded stone. The rich color scale is given by iron oxides, sulfides, the presence of sulfur and various clay minerals. Schist is a medium-grade metamorphic rock with medium to large, flat, sheet-like grains in a preferred orientation (nearby grains are roughly parallel). It is defined by having more than 50% platy and elongated minerals, often finely interleaved with quartz and feldspar. Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, especially hot springs. Travertine often has a fibrous or concentric appearance and exists in white, tan, cream-colored, and even rusty varieties. It is formed by a process of rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate, often at the mouth of a hot spring or in a limestone cave.

To claim this earthcache please send me via profile e-mail the answer to the following questions:
1) What can form stalactites, stalagmites, and other speleothems?
2) How is formed the cave?
3) Why the limestone schists are colored?
Uploaded photos with you and/or your GPS in the cave are welcome!
