Mt Everest, known in Nepali as Sagarmāthā and in Tibetan as Chomolungma, is Earth's highest mountain above sea level. Everest was given its official English name in 1865 by the Royal Geographical Society, upon a recommendation by Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India. As there appeared to be several different local names, Waugh chose to name the mountain after his predecessor in the post, Sir George Everest, despite objections.
The Himalayan mountain range with Mt Everest as seen from the International Space Station looking SSE over the Tibetan Plateau. Four of the world's fourteen 8,000'ers, can be seen: Makalu, Everest, Lhotse and Cho Oyu. Whilst the North route (via Tibet) is shown here (in red); the South Col Route (via Nepal) is Mt Everest's most often used climbing route. [Sources: Wikipedia & NASA ISS]
Located in the northern section of Avon Valley National Park. Access is via unsealed roads, mostly by 4WD, though regular 2WD cars could make it (as did I) with careful driving; but best avoided after heavy rainfall. Do keep alert during periods of extreme fire danger risk. Stay hydrated.
