Geocache Description:

Discovered this plaque near my office whilst out & about for a lunchtime wander.

The cache is a couple of metres around the corner ...

Coords taken were in middle of river so coords modified to show correct as per online maps

Located on the side wall of the Pump House Museum building is a black circular plaque.

It reads "Dedicated to all those whose lives were taken in the first atomic bombings, 40 years ago this week in Hiroshima and Nagasaki ... and to all who strive to rid the world of nuclear weapons and the threat of nuclear war - Hiroshima Day - August 6th".

Manchester City Council first carried a resolution declaring the City a nuclear free zone in November 1980.  Around the city centre there are a number of "memorials" related to that decision including a "Messenger of Peace" statue and a Peace Garden near St. Peter's Square and plaques in the Town Hall.  This plaque placed here by the Manchester City Council and the Greater Manchester Committee for Nuclear Disarmament marks the 40th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1946.  As you will see, it was unveiled by a survivor of the Hiroshima bomb.  Hibakusha is the term used in Japan to refer to victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
