Buffer Stop or Stopblock (US)
This device is used to prevent railway vehicles from going past the
end of the track. The design of the buffer stop is dependent on the
kind of couplings that the railway uses, since the coupling gear
is the first part of the train that the buffer stop touches.
The primary depot for the Norfolk and Virginia Beach Railroad
was located at Seventeenth Street at approximately milepost 17.5.
The line might have had a buffer at the station.
