Il teatro fu costruito sulla cima più alta del Monte Barbaro, in un sito, alle spalle dell'agorà, che era già sede di un luogo di culto molti secoli prima. Sfrutta come scenografia lo splendido panorama del mare e delle colline a perdita d'occhio. fu costruito alla fine del III sec. a.C. secondo i dettami dell'architettura greco-ellenistica, con blocchi di calcare locale. Si discosta dalla struttura tipica dei teatri greci perché la cavea dal diametro di 63 metri, non poggia direttamente sulla roccia ma è stata appositamente costruita ed è sorretta da muri di contenimento. Consta di due ingressi, leggermente sfalsati rispetto all'asse principale dell'edificio ed è in grado di contenere circa 4000 persone.

Das Theater wurde auf dem höchsten Gipfel des Monte Barbaro gebaut, an einem Ort, der schon viele Jahrhunderten zuvor eine religiöse Stätte war. Dabei wurde die schöne Aussicht auf das Meer und die Berge als Kulisse genutzt. Das Theater wurde im späten dritten Jahrhundert vor Chr. nach der griechisch-hellenistischen Architektur aus Blöcken aus regionalem Kalkstein erbaut. Es weicht von der typischen Struktur der griechischen Theater ab. Die halbkreisförmige Cavea, die einen Durchmesser von 63 Metern besitzt, ruht nicht direkt auf dem Felsen, sondern wird von Stützmauern getragen. Das Theater besitzt zwei Eingänge und bietet Platz für 4000 Zuschauer.

The theater was built on the highest peak of Monte Barbaro, in a place that had been a religious site for many centuries. The beautiful view of the sea and the mountains was used as a backdrop. The theater was built in the late third century BC according to Greek-Hellenistic architecture from blocks of regional limestone. It differs from the typical structure of the Greek theater. The semi-circular Cavea, 63 meters in diameter, does not rest directly on the rock but is supported by retaining walls. The theater has two entrances and has room for 4000 spectators.
