The foundation stone for the church was laid on Saturday, September 3rd 1938 by Bishop Lee and the church was opened officially on February 26th 1939. It is dedicated to St Dominic in recognition of the work of the Dominican friars; In 1845 William Leigh bought an estate at Woodchester where he built a church and invited the Passionist Fathers and then the Dominicans to minister to the area. They built churches at Stroud and Nympsfield. They also received many people into the Church, and these formed the basis of the Catholic community in Dursley. Initially the Dominicans said Mass in a barn in Broadwell Street Dursley, and from 1933 Mass was said in a YMCA hut in Long Street. Parishioners included Mrs Millicent Lister, wife of Robert Browning Lister (grandson of Robert Ashton Lister, founder of RA Lister & Co), and Evelyn Waugh and his wife. Waugh was a convert and when he and his wife Laura moved to Piers Court, Stinchcombe in 1937 he was disgusted at the Mass Center in the YMCA hut, and supported local efforts, led by Mrs. Lister to raise money to build a church. The church was to cost two thousand six hundred and eighty nine pounds, thirteen shillings and five pence, the architect's fee being one hundred and thirty-five pounds.
