(EN) The Garni Gorge is situated 23 km east of Yerevan, Armenia, just below the village with the same name. On a promontory above the gorge the first-century AD Garni temple may be seen. Along the sides of the gorge are cliff walls of well-preserved basalt columns, carved out by the Goght River. This portion of the Garni Gorge is typically referred to as the "Symphony of the Stones." Basalt is an igneous rock called lava stone base is a mixture of iron and magnesium silicates olivine and pyroxene with minerals like calcium-rich feldspar. Typically gray basalt has closed the shades of color to black, appearing as a mass of fine-grained, sometimes with inclusions of rocks of a different color. The fine grain of the basalt is determined by the relatively rapid cooling of the lava, in the case of slow cooling to form hexagonal columns of basalt. The basalt products are the result of the intraplate magmatic activity in the Transylvanian - Pannonian block from Romania and Hungary, following alpine consolidations. Volcanic break out centres generated along a NE-SW alignment that marks fractures of the lithosphere belonging to the most recent geological periods, continuing south of the Danube. Racos zone from Persani Mountains is the best known and spectacular zone with typical features and a lot of varieties of basaltic rocks. The columns are formed by cooling down the lava which was spilled on to pyroclas layer. When the fluidity of lava-strength in that temperature range has been unable to keep up tension resulting from the contraction of the lava body along a fracture network is divided into columns. The columns Ideally, hexagons, but often observe five, six, four and even eight-sided columns. The gray solid green olivine basalt sometimes contains inclusions in crystals.
