The choice of locations for the various forts, camps, posts, and block houses depended on a number of different factors. "Need" was of course the first factor. Duration of active use, strategic location at a junction of roads, at river crossings, on bluffs or hills with clear fields of view, presence of resources for building the fort, nearness of settlements, all determined the army's decision for placement of a military structure. However, the one thing that was critical to the survival of the troops quartered at these outposts was WATER, clean, fresh, and plentiful. Natural springs such as Fanning were ideal, especially when they met the other requirements as well.

Please abide by all park rules and respect the flora and fauna of the park.
