1ere et 2eme chutes




[FR] Les Chutes de la rivière du Grand Carbet figurent parmi les cascades les plus impressionnantes des Petites Antilles. Cette rivière doit sans doute son nom au village amérindien, composé de carbets (grandes cases ouvertes servant d’abris), qui était installé non loin de son embouchure.
La Rivière du Grand Carbet prend sa source dans le flanc Est de la Soufrière. Ses eaux sulfureuses, s’éclaircissent après trois chutes pour se jeter dans la mer, sur la façade atlantique de l’île, 11 km plus bas.
On raconte que Christophe Colomb, lorsqu’il débarqua en Guadeloupe en novembre 1493, aperçut les deux premières chutes depuis le rivage de Capesterre Belle-Eau.


[EN] The Grand Carbet River Falls are among the most impressive waterfalls in the Lesser Antilles. This river must have its name in the Amerindian village, composed of carbets (large open buts serving as shelters), which was installed not far from its mouth.
The Grand Carbet River originales in the eastern flank of the Soufriere. Its sulphurous waters are cleared after three falls to throw themselves into the sea, on the Atlantic coast of the island, 11 km below.
It is said that Christopher Columbus, when he land in Guadeloupe in November 1493, saw the first two falls from the shore of Capesterre Belle-Eau.



1ere chute


[FR] Comment s'y rendre:
Pour les 1ère et 2ème chutes du Carbet, sur la Nationale, au sud de Capesterre-Belle-Eau, prendre à droite (en venant du nord) la route RD4 qui part de St-Sauveur et monte vers les Chutes du Carbet. La route monte pendant 6-7 km jusqu’à un parking, point de départ des sentiers. La 2ème chute est accessible facilement (3/4 h A/R). Depuis le séisme des Saintes (21/11/04, Mw = 6.3), l’accès jusqu’au pied de la chute est interdit, mais différents points de vue permettent une bonne observation. L’accès à la 1ère chute est plus long et plus sportif (3h A/R). Pour accéder à la 3ème chute, au niveau de la sortie sud de Capesterre sur la Nationale, prendre en direction de Routhier – Fond Cacao jusqu’à Petit Marquisat. Randonnée facile (1h30 A/R).

A noter que l'accès aux 2 premières chutes est payante. Comptez environ 2,3 euros pour un adulte. Il existe un tarif enfant et un tarif groupe.
Cette earthcache vous mènera au pied de la 1ere chute (la plus haute en altitude). C'est une randonnée difficile. Comptez 1h45 pour la montee et environ 3h pour l'aller/retour. Une bonne condition physique est nécessaire ainsi que de bonnes chaussures. Ne tentez pas si la meteo est a la pluie.


[EN] How to get there:
For the 1st and 2nd falls of the Carbet, on the Nationale, south of Capesterre-Belle-Eau, take on the right (coming from the north) the RD4 road that starts from St-Sauveur and goes up towards Carbet Falls. The road climbs for 6-7 km to a parking lot, the starting point of the trails. The second fall is easily accessible (3/4 hrs). Since the quake of the Saintes (21/11/04, Mw = 6.3), access to the foot of the fall is prohibited, but different points of view allow a good observation. Access to the 1st fall is longer and sportier (3h A / R). To reach the 3rd waterfall, at the south exit of Capesterre on the Nationale, take towards Routhier - Fond Cacao until Petit Marquisat. Easy hile (1h30 A / R).

Please note that access to the first 2 falls is subject to a fee. Allow about 2.3 euros for an adult. There is a child rate and a group rate.
This earthcache will take you to the foot of the first fall (the highest in altitude). It is a difficult hike. Count 1h45 for the climb and about 3h for the round trip. A good physical condition is necessary as well as good shoes. Do not try if the weather is rainy.





[FR] Les trois chutes du Carbet sont des ressauts morphologiques correspondant à l’empilement de coulées de lave:
-La premère chute est quant à elle située dans un ensemble géologique plus récent, l’épisode Carmichaël, également représenté par l’épanchement de coulées andésitiques épaisses. Ces formations n’ont pas pu être datées directement, mais leurs âges doivent se situer dans la fourchette 0.140 Ma - 11 500 BP (Boudon et al., 1988).
-La deuxième chute est située dans des coulées liées à la phase Grande Découverte sensu stricto. Cette phase correspond à la construction de l’essentiel du volume du Massif de la Soufrière. Représenté par un ensemble de coulées laviques massives superposées, de composition andésitique, qui affleurent sporadiquement à la périphérie du massif et en forme l’armature morphologique. Cet épisode serait situé dans une période d’une durée de 30 000 ans environ, à partir d’il y a 140 000 ans (Boudon et al., 1988).
-La troisième chute est localisée au front de la coulée la plus en aval de l’ensemble Grande Découverte reposant sur des formations géologiques plus anciennes. Son ressaut correspond à la hauteur de la coulée. La coulée de la 3ème chute du Carbet a été daté à 0.129 Ma (Blanc, 1983).

[EN] The three falls of the Carbet are morphological projections corresponding to the stack of lava flows:
-The first fall is located in a more récent geological ensemble, the Carmichael épisode, also represented by the effusion of trick andesitic flows. These formations could not be dated directly, but their ages must be in the range 0.140 Ma - 11,500 BP (Boudon et al., 1988).
-The second fall is located in flows related to the Grande Découverte phase sensu stricto. This phase corresponds to the construction of the bulk of the volume of the Massif de la Soufrière. Represented by a set of superimposed massive lava flows of andesitic composition, which sporadically appear at the periphery of the massif and form the morphological framework. This épisode would be in a period of about 30 000 years, starting from 140 000 years ago (Boudon et al., 1988).
-The third fall is located at the front of the most downstream stream of the Grande Découverte complex, resting on older geological formations. Its jump corresponds to the height of the casting. The casting of the 3rd Carbet fall was dated to 0.129 Ma (White, 1983).
