Chess Mazes
1. The object is to capture the black king in the lowest possible number of moves (the shortest path through the maze).
2. The “maze piece” is the only one designated white piece (in this case the knight) that is allowed to move. Black does not get a turn.
3. The maze piece may not move to a square attacked by a black piece. It may cross over an attacked square. (There is only one black piece in this maze and it cannot move without being in Check!)
4. The maze piece may not capture any pieces.
Chess rules for movement and capture of the pieces will apply. That means that for this maze, the only piece that will "move" is the white knight. All of the other pieces, including the black king, are stationary.
In Chess, all of the pieces move in a straight line – vertically, horizontally or diagonally – except the knight. Its path can be described as an L-shape or one step vertically or horizontally and one step diagonally.
Notice that if it starts out on a black square, it lands on a white square and vice versa. Another oddity, about the knight, is that it can jump over other pieces.
Using this movement, find the shortest path for the knight to get from its starting position to the black king’s position. As you move, record the number for each square that you land on. Use the FIRST TEN of these numbers to determine the coordinates of the cache.
The cache coordinates are in the form N 44° __ __ . __ __ __ W 078° __ __ . __ __ __ The blanks are filled with the first ten of the numbers that you recorded and in order starting with your first move.
