Geocache Description:

Placed for the 5th annual OFTFFF event.  This is one of the "spirit quest run" hides, bringing you to one of N. Florida's lesser knwon, but older and more historic cemeteries.

The cache is located outside the fence!  If you visit the cemetery, please be respectful.

Of significant note is that the former Governor of Florida, Madison Starke Perry (for whom the towns of Starke and Perry are named), along with his wife, son, and possiby family slaves, are all buried here.  Gov. Perry was responsible for taking Florida out of the Union at the start of the Civil War.  Reading the historical marker will give you some basic information.  For many years, the exact location of some of the family graves was not known, but through the dilligent research of some Alachua County historians, the graves were located and replacement headstones provided.

To the right as you enter the cemetery is an area was separated by a fence, where people of African origin are buried.  Some of these are believed to have been slaves and the descendants of slaves of the Perry plantation in Rochelle.

Please help maintain the beauty and sanctity of this site by picking up any trash you may find.
