Situated in Kingston, Georgetown, the Lighthouse is a red & white striped 31m octagonal shaped building. It was first built out of wood by the Dutch in 1817 and is located roughly 1/4 mile from the Demerara River. In 1830, the lighthouse was rebuilt using brick and concrete and stands on a foundation of greenheart wood, a popular and durable wood species in Guyana. It has been designated a National Monument in Guyana. The Lighthouse is open for tours and one can benefit from a stunning view of the city of Georgetown from the top of the Lighthouse.
