Coill Bhearna
Tá Coill Bhearna suite ar imeall thiar Chathair na Gaillimhe. Tá casáin sa choill le siúlóidí deasa. Is iomaí cineál ainmhí, éan, crann agus plánda atá le feiceáil.
Tá roinnt gnéithe seandálaíocht spéisiúl sa choill, tobar bheannaithe agus carraig aifrinn. Tá trácht / tuairisicí ann chomh maith go bhfuil fulacht fiadh agus áit a bhailigh bruscar ó ithe sliogéisc ann. Tá rian sean-teorainn garrantaí le feiceáil anseo agus ansiúd.
Sa 13ú / 14ú céad thóg Clann Uí Allúráin Caisleán Bhearna ar imeall an sruthan a ritheann isteach i Loch Róisín. Tá cuntas ann go raibh cónaí ar Eoghan Ó hAllúráin ann i 1574. Thóg na Loinsigh seilbh ar an chaisleán sa 17ú céad. Is cosúil gur leagadh go tallamh é ag tús an 19ú céad.
Coill Bhearna (Bearna Woods)
Coill Bhearna is situated on the western boundary of Galway City. There's a lovely walk through the woods. It is rich in wildlife with many species of animals, birds, trees and plants to be seen.
There are some interesting archaeological things in the wood, a holy well and a mass rock. It is reported that there is also a fulacht fiadh and a shell midden in the woods.
Fulacht Fiadh is a pit or trough that was used, it is generally believed, to boil food/meat in. They are found near a source of water and a source of fuel. Both are to be found here. Shell Midden a place where the debris from eating shellfish has cumulated. There are traces of boundry walls here and there.
In th 13th/14th century the Ó hAllúráin (O’Halloran) family built a castle by the river that runs into Loch Róisín (Lough Rusheen). There is a record of it being occupied by Eoghan Ó hAllúráin in 1574. In the 17th century the Ó Loinsigh (Lynch) family took possession of the castle. It appears that the remains of the castle was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century.
Bearna means Gap and alludes to the space between the two drumlins (low oval mounds) along the shoreline.
