Mississippi has many historical mounds. The Mississippi Department of Archives and History has created the Mississippi Mound Trail to tell the story of these mounds. These mounds are believed to have been built by Native Americans some 300 to 2100 years ago. The earliest of these mounds are believed to have been built in the Middle Woodland Period. The building of mounds continued through the Late Woodland Period and into the Mississippian Period. Most Mississippian mounds were ceremonial in nature, rectangular, flat-topped earthen platforms that had temples or houses of important people on them.
This site consist of three mounds thought to have been built in the Coles Creek Period and occupied from 900 to 1100 AD.Mound A and B stand only 10 feet tall. It is believed that some 6 feet of silt has been deposited in the area and all mounds once stood taller. Mound C was believed to be some 6 foot tall in the past, but currently is not visible on the surface. There is evidence that Mound C may have been around as far back as 200-400 AD (Middle Woodland Period). Excavations at the site have revealed refuse that points to this site as having been used as a ceremonial area. In fact, quartz crystal that comes from around the Hot Springs, AR area has been recovered in the area. There are historic markers that tell the tale of the mounds.
