Geocache Description:

A quick and easy EarthCache along Lee's Ferry Road in the Glen Canyon Recreational Area just off Hwy 89A.

Many thousands of years ago, a huge boulder of conglomerate broke from the cliff above and rolled to a stop here. Since that time, at least 6 feet (2.8m) of this slope has eroded away.

Ultimately, the softer rock which is now protected by the umbrella of harder conglomerate will erode and the giant boulder will again topple to the ground. Given sufficient time, weathering will also break down the boulder.

Similar erosion is occurring along all the cliffs in this area. The softer rock is washing away, leaving overhangs of harder rock which will someday break off and roll down the slope.

Logging requirements

Email me with the correct answers to the following:

1. The massive boulder(s) are of a particular conglomerate. What is the name of it?
2. From what formation does the pedestal originate?
3. What is the name of the process of erosion described here?
4. There are a number of areas that mark the sites of former balanced rocks. How many do you see in the immediate foreground?
* Do not post your answers here. Logs containing answers will be unceremoniously deleted.

Optionally, feel free to post photos, but please do not include the informational signage. Have fun but please remember to Leave No Trace. Thanks!
