Geocache Description:

PAIGNTON-Origin 'Paega's farmstead'. First mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086

Paega's farmstead is the Saxon pre Norman name at the time of the Domesday book Peintone was it's more likely name. There has been a settlement here since the bronze age. At the time of the Domesday book Paignton was under the guardianship of the Bishops of Exeter. Guardianship of Paignton had started in 1050 and remained until 1549 in their hands, during that time they built a palace in the centre, all that remains of this is the tower and two defensive walls which are now grade II Listed.( They can be viewed at N50 26.162 W003 34.150 ).
